Andreas Andrianopoulos was a member of the Greek Parliament from 1974-1994, and in 1986 became mayor of the city of Piraeus. He has served as Deputy Minister of Social Services (1976), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1977), Minister of Culture and Sciences (1980) and Minister of Trade (1989). In August 1991 he entered the inner Cabinet as Minister of Trade, Industry, Energy and Technology. In August 1992, he became Minister of State with a wide range of responsibilities. In 1994 he resigned his seat in Parliament and withdrew from politics to spend more time in academia and work in the private sector.

Andreas Andrianopoulos has been a Visiting Scholar at the St. Edmund’s College, Cambridge University (1995-96), and a Fellow and Public Policy Scholar of the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. (1998-99). His particular academic interests cover the political and economic complexities of building oil and gas pipelines through Transcaucasia and Central Asia as well as the explosive prospects of the revival of fundamentalist Islam in those areas.

The English version of his book “In the Heart of Islam: From the Steppes of Central Asia to Afghanistan
is forthcoming in London.

Mr. Andrianopoulos will be giving several other talks during the week of April 8th.
