A distinguished diplomat since 1963, Hugo Paemen served as Ambassador of the European Union to the United States from 1995 to 1999. In 1978 he served as Chief of Staff for Vice-President Viscount Davignon of the European Commission. From 1985-1986 he was the spokesman for European Commission President Jacques Delors. From 1987-1995 he worked as Deputy Director General for External Relations for the EC and successfully led the European negotiation team during the WTO-Uruguay Round. Ambassador Paemen has written and contributed to a number of books and articles relating to transatlantic diplomatic issues, including From the GATT to the WTO: the European Community in the Uruguay Round; The European Union and the World Trade Organization; and The European Union in International Affairs. He currently serves as Senior Advisor for Hogan and Hartson L.L.P., the German Marshall Fund, and Special Advisor to the President of the European Commission.
